  4.     The conservative New Democracy Party had just entered into
  5. a historic coalition with the Communist-led Alliance of the Left
  6. and was ready to start work. But when Cabinet members arrived
  7. at their offices last week, some found them stripped of files
  8. and equipment. Tzannis Tzannetakis, the new Prime Minister, was
  9. greeted by a single staffer, who told him, "Everything has been
  10. looked after, so there is no need for files."

  12.     The story was similar in ministry after ministry: no
  13. records, not even paper clips. Had members of Andreas
  14. Papandreou's outgoing Panhellenic Socialist Movement spirited
  15. away documents that might be incriminating? Their administration
  16. stands accused of large-scale corruption, including embezzlement
  17. and taking kickbacks. Angry politicians suggested that stripping
  18. the offices was also an act of revenge. Some PASOK officials
  19. admitted as much. Sniffed one: "It was a show of our disapproval
  20. of the way this government was formed."
